Planning guide
The distance from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport to Rochester is about 80 miles, and there is no train. That leaves five ways to cover it: rent a car, ride a scheduled shuttle, call a rideshare, hire a taxi, or book a private car. Each works in the right situation. This guide walks through all five so you can pick the one that matches your trip. We run a private car service in Rochester, so we have a stake in one of them, and we will tell you where the others are the better choice.
Most drivers leave MSP and head south and east to U.S. Highway 52, which runs straight to Rochester. In normal conditions the drive takes a bit under an hour and a half. Rush hour on the Twin Cities side can add 20 to 30 minutes. Winter storms can turn the trip into three hours or more, and sometimes into a postponed one.
Keep two numbers in mind when you plan: the time on the road and the time between landing and leaving the airport. Between deplaning, baggage claim, and finding your ride, count on 30 to 60 minutes before you are moving. If you land at Terminal 2, allow extra time because many shuttle and ground transport pickups are at Terminal 1.
A rental car is flexible and economical if two or more people share the cost. You can stop for food, take a detour, and keep the car for local errands.
The drawbacks are real. You drive 80 miles after a flight, possibly in the dark or in snow, and you need to be comfortable doing that. Downtown Rochester parking can be limited or costly near the medical campuses. If you are traveling for an appointment, you may be tired, medicated, or distracted, and a car sitting in a hotel lot is a poor trade for the savings.
A fit for: confident drivers, groups of three or more, trips that include a lot of travel beyond Rochester.
Scheduled shuttles run between MSP and Rochester on fixed departures, usually several a day. Fares are lower per person than a private car, and the vehicles are comfortable. The trade-offs are timing and stops. You may have to wait for the next departure after your flight lands, and the ride takes longer because the vehicle stops at multiple locations. Home or hotel pickup, where offered, may cost extra or need to be arranged by phone.
Check three things before you book a shuttle: how late the last departure leaves MSP, whether your terminal is a stop, and what the policy is when your flight is delayed.
A fit for: solo travelers on a budget with a flexible schedule and a flight that lands near a departure.
Rideshare apps work well in cities and poorly for 80-mile trips. Availability at the airport is uneven, drivers may cancel when they see the destination, and the fare is hard to predict. Getting a ride back from Rochester to MSP at 4 a.m. for an early flight is a particular gamble.
A fit for: short local rides within Rochester once you have arrived. Not recommended for the airport run.
Taxis in Rochester serve local trips and some airport runs, but the MSP trip is long enough that most need to be arranged ahead of time and priced individually. Call the company before you travel and ask for the fare in writing or by text.
A fit for: occasional local rides. Confirm everything in advance for the MSP trip.
A private car is booked ahead, tracks your flight, meets you at baggage claim, and drives directly to your destination without other passengers or stops. It costs more than a shuttle, and the price is quoted before you commit.
You pay for convenience: no timetable, no transfers, no parking. The ride starts when you are ready, including late-night arrivals. For patients, caregivers, families with luggage, and anyone who does not want to think about logistics, this is the simplest option.
A fit for: Mayo Clinic patients and families, business travelers, late arrivals, and anyone traveling with luggage or a companion who needs help. Our MSP to Rochester page covers how Gold Crown handles the route.
The answers will tell you more than the price does.
From November through March, the safest choice is usually the one that puts a local, experienced driver behind the wheel. Snow and ice can slow traffic to a crawl and cause road closures, and rental cars are often unfamiliar vehicles with unfamiliar tires. If conditions look bad, call your provider a day ahead and talk through timing. For more, read our post on winter driving between MSP and Rochester.
The return trip deserves the same planning, especially for early flights. A typical rule is to be at MSP two hours before a domestic departure. With the drive, that means leaving Rochester roughly three and a half hours before takeoff, and more in winter. Book the ride before you leave home rather than the night before.
Many of the people on this route are patients or family members. Add one more question to your list: can the driver take me to the right entrance? The guide to getting to Mayo Clinic covers campuses, hotels, and appointment planning.
The right option on a Tuesday afternoon can be the wrong one at midnight. During the day you have more shuttle departures, more rideshare drivers, and fewer weather surprises. After about 9 p.m., options narrow quickly, and by midnight a private car may be the only ground transportation that fits your flight. If your itinerary lands late, price the private car first and treat other options as backups.
Per-person cost changes a lot with group size. A solo traveler pays the full fare on a private car, while a family of four splitting one vehicle often finds the gap between a private car and four shuttle tickets is smaller than expected. A rental car is cheapest at three or more riders. Run the numbers for your actual party before you assume one option is cheaper.
Count your luggage before you choose. Two large suitcases and a carry-on fit easily in any of the options. Medical equipment, a folding wheelchair, or a bike box may not. Shuttles often have luggage limits, and rideshare cars are small. Tell a private car company what you are bringing and they choose a vehicle with room.
If you are going to a medical appointment or a meeting, the cost of a missed connection can exceed the cost of the ride. Weigh reliability heavily on your arrival leg, and keep the cheaper, more flexible options for the trip home when your schedule is looser.
If you are comfortable driving 80 miles, carrying your own bags, and finding parking, rent a car. If your flight lands near a shuttle departure and you travel light, take the shuttle. If you are arriving late, traveling with a patient, or carrying a lot of gear, book a private car in advance. For a short trip inside Rochester, use rideshare or a taxi.
